ActionSA will write to Eskom, demanding reasons for its refusal to address the failed provision of power to the residents of Duduza, in the East of Ekurhuleni. Residents in this area have lived without power for over three months now.
Challenges for the residents started when a substation supplying power to the area exploded in May 2021. With Eskom being the sole supplier to the area, residents hoped in vain that the substation would be repaired, and power restored. To date, the community’s own engagements with the power utility have been fruitless.
Since then, more than 500 households have endured winter cold nights. Instead of addressing the power supply problem, Eskom has only removed and replaced meter boxes within the area without any proper consultation.
As one may expect, despite the suffering of residents, the City of Ekurhuleni has washed its hands of the situation; no meaningful assistance has been provided. Indeed, the community alleges that the present ward councillor, reneged from this promise to provide meaningful assistance and have power restored to the area.
Eskom’s treatment of this community is beyond abhorrent. While looting and corruption has gone unabated at the utility, innocent communities such as this are punished for the corruption at the utility by being denied access to basic quality services.
Tomorrow, ActionSA Mayoral Candidate, Tlhogi Moseki, will visit the affected residents to develop a meaningful solution to the problem.
