Quality assurance is an over-riding priority in the manufacturing of the small- and medium calibre ammunition used by the South Africa’s defence and police services.

Denel PMP, located in Pretoria West, is the dominant supplier of small arms ammunition for handguns used by the SAPS for both operational and training requirements.

Phaladi Petje the CEO of Denel PMP says Denel PMP has built a viable partnership with the defence and security sectors over many decades. “We provide these sectors with a full range of small calibre ammunition – meeting and exceeding their rigorous requirements for quality, reliability and performance.”

All products leaving the PMP manufacturing facilities are subjected to stringent quality and safety tests. Manufacturing and quality assurance processes are overseen by a team of trained and experienced professionals.

Eva Mokgokoni, 37 has been responsible for quality management in the explosives and munitions environments for more than a decade. Prior to joining Denel PMP, she served as a technical officer in the South African Navy where she was responsible for qualification specifications and the evaluation of ammunition.

She joined PMP in 2016 as a senior technician in the quality-engineering department. “My main responsibilities focus on the qualification of new products as well the maintenance and auditing of management systems,” she says.

Mokgokoni has completed a national diploma in explosives management and is busy completing her BTech degree in this specialised field which covers all aspects of manufacturing, handling and disposal of ammunition and ordnance.

In the past year, Denel PMP expanded its quality management credentials by qualifying for the ISO9001:2015 and OHSAS18001 certificates issued by the SA Bureau of Standards. This is a crucial benchmark for the company as it confirms the safety of the manufacturing environment at its facilities and underwrites the quality of the products delivered to its clients.

Denel PMP also exports a wide range of small- and medium calibre ammunition and is a major supplier of specialised ammunition to the hunting and sports shooting communities.

Its relationship with the defence and security sectors, however, remain a business priority. “We contribute greatly to the broader crime prevention efforts in the country by ensuring our law enforcement officials have ready access to quality, locally manufactured products,” says Petje.
