Majority of political parties at Ekurhuleni council have supported a motion to postpone the election for a mayor.
The African National Congress (ANC), Inkatha Freedom Party, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and the Democratic Alliance all supported the sitting being cancelled due to council voting technicalities.
The main reason that the meeting has been postponed and supported by the EFF and ANC follows the collapse of talks between the two parties.
Council Speaker Raymond Dhlamini supported the postponement and said he would call a special council sitting in the next seven days. News24 reported that the ANC and EFF had tense talks during caucus breaks at the special council sitting.
The two parties were win negotiations about mayoral candidates in hopes of striking a deal. These talks seem to have deadlocked and negotiations were expected to continue following the postponement of the meeting.
