The DA calls on KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Community Safety and Liaison MEC, Sipho Hlomuka and his department to prioritise the safety of the province’s citizens, by ensuring additional measures, as we head into the busy Easter weekend.

The terrible reality is that holiday periods are also a time when crime tends to spike. Apart from serious crime, house-breakings are a significant issue. Drugs and guns are also transported in and out of the province under cover of high traffic volumes.

This means that KZN’s law enforcement teams must be on top of their game.

It means more road blocks, stop and searches and ensuring that speed cameras are working. It also means more visible policing on our roads, in our towns and in our residential areas so that criminals know they are being watched.

The reality is that many of these anti-crime measures do not exist in KZN despite ongoing high crime levels. This, as a result of a Taliban faction ANC government that does not care. As long as they have drivers and bodyguards – paid for by our province’s taxpayers – they are well protected while the rest of society lives in fear.

When the people of KZN go to the polls on 29 May, they will have the opportunity to vote for a new government – one that will work hard to ensure safer communities. They deserve nothing less.
