As winter is slowly creeping upon the country, dam levels in Free State have been holding steady. The provincial average water storage is at 88.4. % this week which is a slight drop when compared to last year’s level of 96.1%.

The approaching winter season is a time when pipe bursts can be anticipated in our homes as well as the main pipe lines. The department appeals to communities to fix leaks and burst pipes in and around their home.

The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) measure dam levels across the country weekly in order to take informed decisions when it comes to distribution of water to relevant dams for consumption by communities.

According to this week’s dam reports Kalkfontein Dam is currently sitting at 30.6%. Sterkfontein is at 93.3%, Gariep Dam is sitting at 99.3% and Krugersdrift Dam is at 99.7%. Groothoek Dam is at 40.0%.  Rustfontein Dam currently sits at a low of 37.0%.

DWS appeals to communities to always take care of water resources and report any vandalism. Pipe burst from the main line should be reported to the local municipality. Always use water sparingly, like using a cup when brushing teeth and using a bucket instead of a hose pipe.
