The Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Rob Davies will deliver a speech at the Eastern Cape Provincial Liquor Industry Summit on Monday, 6 March 2017. The summit, which will be hosted by the MEC of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs in the Eastern Cape, Mr Sakhumzi Somyo will take place at the East London International Convention Centre from 5 -7 March 2017. A broad range of stakeholders is expected to attend the Summit

The purpose of the summit is to provide a platform for stakeholder engagement on how to enhance liquor regulation in the Eastern Cape.

Among the key objectives of the summit are:

  • To share expert knowledge and best practices on liquor regulation;
  • To streamline roles of various spheres of government and different departments in liquor regulation;
  • To discuss and resolve on strategies to mitigate the harmful effects of the abuse of alcohol;
  • To discuss and adopt the National Norms and Standards with a view to align the new/amended legislation;
  • To re-examine the license fee structure in line with the developmental agenda of government; and
  • To discuss the role of the liquor industry in developing the new entrants into the liquor industry

It is envisaged that outcomes of the summit will streamline liquor regulatory framework in Eastern Cape, and further provide strategies on how to reduce liquor related socio-economic harms.
