The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Mogale City has championed the construction of a bulk water storage reservoir in the Muldersdrift area of the municipality.
This follows a motion submitted by the DA in council in July of 2023 that was preceded by a decade of back and forth between Mogale City Council and the Department of Water and Sanitation who instructed that a reservoir should be constructed.
While one understands that projects of this scale take time, 10 years without any tangible results is inexcusable.
In recent years, residents and businesses have struggled with limited water supply, often experiencing days without water. The result is that residents put their lives at risk by walking kilometres to fill water buckets, often in the dark in high crime risk areas. Businesses, reliant on water, have had to close their doors, adding to the high levels of local unemployment.
Investigations found that the infrastructure is not equipped to handle the current water demand and will not be able to accommodate any further development - which is desperately needed in this peri-urban and rural community.
The motion, submitted by the DA, was adopted with the full support of all members of Council. Unanimously uniting all parties to prioritise plans for service delivery in communities.
Council further resolved to table regular quarterly reports to ensure monitoring, and evaluation in terms of project management. In the interest of transparency and accountability, the DA in Mogale City will regularly ensure that residents are aware of how this project is progressing.
