ANC NEC to meet over fate of KZN leadership
Another showdown looms in the ANC National Executive Committee as it meets on Friday to decide on the fate of the KwaZulu-Natal provincial executive committee.
The faction loyal to President Jacob Zuma is preparing to fight for the party to defend the PEC in the wake of a Pietermaritzburg High Court judgment that nullified its 2015 elective conference.
Some members want the NEC to appeal the decision itself, while others say the current PEC must be disbanded.
The special NEC meeting, which had been scheduled for yesterday after the top six met with the KZN PEC at the party's Luthuli House headquarters, was postponed to Friday, September 22, as many leaders are attending the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Zim opposition challenges new voter registration process
The Zimbabwean High Court yesterday deferred to Thursday the hearing of an urgent chamber application by the Morgan Tsvangirai-led MDC-T, where the main opposition political party is seeking an order to suspend the new registration of voters, saying the country’s elections management body, Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, is “ill-prepared” to conduct the exercise.
The opposition party on September 13, through their lawyers, filed the urgent chamber application challenging President Robert Mugabe’s proclamation which he made on September 8, arguing that the electoral commission was not prepared for the beginning of new registration of voters.
They said the electoral body did not have both sufficient equipment and trained personnel to commence the registration exercise.
A High Court judge deferred the case to Thursday after Mugabe’s representatives indicated they needed time to study and respond to the opposition party’s sit-down application.
And, Eastern Cape court to hear UDM application to reinstate Bobani as deputy mayor
The Port Elizabeth High Court is expected to hear the application by the UDM today, to challenge the ousting of former Nelson Mandela Bay deputy mayor Mongameli Bobani.
The UDM have launched a civil application in the high court to interdict and restrain the municipality from implementing the August 24, decision to remove Bobani.
The UDM want Bobani reinstated as deputy mayor, saying that the vote, which removed him from office, was unconstitutional and unlawful.
Bobani was ousted at a council meeting with 60 votes from the DA, the African Christian Democratic Party, Congress of the People and the Patriotic Alliance. He was accused of undermining the administration by voting with the ANC on several occasions.
Opposition parties, including the EFF and the ANC walked out of council chambers while the motion of no confidence was in progress.
