Zuma's bid to appeal private prosecution ruling is dismissed with costs

Former president Jacob Zuma's application for leave to appeal a recent ruling on his private prosecution of State advocate Billy Downer and journalist Karyn Maughan, has been dismissed with costs by three judges in the KwaZulu-Natal High Court in Pietermaritzburg.

The court previously threw out Zuma's private prosecution, saying it was an abuse of process.

In delivering judgment today, Judge Gregory Kruger said the court arrived at the conclusion that there are no merits in any of the arguments raised by Zuma.

DA wants Nersa to re-evaluate electricity tariff increase

The Democratic Alliance today said its latest court application seeks to force the National Electricity Regulator of South Africa to re-evaluate its electricity tariff increase, and ensure that public participation is undertaken to provide crucial data on the impact of the proposed tariff increase.

The party took government to court over loadshedding and the “unaffordable” electricity tariff hike of over 30%.

The DA's court papers argued that Nersa misinterpreted the Electricity Regulation Act, and did not take public participation into account when the Multi-Year Price Determination was undertaken.

DA Federal Council chairperson Helen Zille noted that the party was seeking to have the MYPD decision declared invalid and suspended, and that it was giving Nersa six months to remedy the situation.

Nersa has granted Eskom a 31.4% electricity tariff hike over the next two years. Zille said this meant that South Africans were forced to pay much more for electricity at a time when millions were unemployed as a result of loadshedding.

And, non-stop Stage 4 until further notice after breakdowns

Due to breakdowns at Arnot, Duvha and Grootvlei power stations, as well as the delay in returning generating units to service, Stage 4 loadshedding will be implemented from 12pm today until further notice.

Previously, loadshedding was supposed to alternate between Stages 3 and 4 on Monday.
