Busisiwe Mkhwebane quits EFF
One year after announcing her membership of the Economic Freedom Fighters, former Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane has announced her resignation from the party.
Today, Mkhwebane took to the X platform and said she had taken the decision to spend more time with her family.
She thanked the EFF for its support after laying out alleged harassment that she and her family had received since she was removed from the Public Protector’s office by the National Assembly in September 2023.
She claimed that during her years as Public Protector her rights were violated, stating that the last seven years had made her realise that the “fight for freedom was in vain”.
She went on to allege that her removal from office was unconstitutional.
Tito Mboweni honoured with official funeral
Former Reserve Bank Governor and Labour and Finance Minister, Tito Mboweni, has been accorded a Special Official Category 2 Funeral.
Mboweni passed away last week Saturday following a short illness. He was 65 years old.
The funeral will take place at Nkowankowa Stadium, in Tzaneen, in Limpopo, at 10h00 on Saturday.
President Cyril Ramaphosa said the South African Police Service will provide ceremonial elements at the funeral and the National Flag be flown at half-mast at all flag stations from today, until the evening of the funeral on Saturday.
Kenyan senate opens impeachment hearings against deputy president
Kenya's senate began impeachment hearings against Kenya's deputy president, today, hours after a court said the proceedings were constitutional, clearing the way for a vote on his dismissal this week.
Last week, Kenya's National Assembly voted to impeach deputy president Rigathi Gachagua, on 11 charges which included corruption, undermining the government and stirring ethnic hatred. He has denied all charges.
Gachagua has said the impeachment motion, backed by opposition lawmakers and allies of President William Ruto, was based on falsehoods that constituted a political lynching.
As the senate opened proceedings, Gachagua denied the 11 charges.
