High chance of load-shedding later today

Eskom announced on Friday morning that South Africa's national power system remains "tight and vulnerable" with a high risk of rotational power cuts later in the day. 

The utility did not say when load-shedding could be implemented or at what stage.

This comes after the power utility terminated stage 2 load-shedding at 05:00 on Friday morning. This unusual overnight load-shedding helped Eskom in the partial recovery of its emergency resources "to get through the morning".

Eskom explained that it will need to continue replenishing both water levels at pumped storage schemes and diesel for its open cycle gas turbines over the weekend to place it in a better position to stabilise for the week ahead.

DA urges Ramaphosa to rebuke Mabuza over comments on rights abuses in Africa

The main opposition, the Democratic Alliance has asked President Cyril Ramaphosa to rebuke his deputy David Mabuza for refusing to publicly condemn attacks and human rights abuses levelled against members of the LGBTQI+ community across Africa.

In response to a question from a DA legislator during a session in the National Council of Provinces about whether he would take a stand to condemn the abuses, Mabuza's answer was: "Let's be decent and keep our mouths shut."

South Africa's Constitution outlaws discrimination based on sexual orientation, and the country was fifth country in the world and remains the only one in Africa to legalise same-sex marriage.

And, Hanekom welcomes defamation ruling, but Zuma yet to remove 'enemy agent' tweet

Former tourism minister and African National Congress stalwart Derek Hanekom has welcomed the ruling of Judge Dhaya Pillay against former president Jacob Zuma's leave to appeal.

She had ruled that his statement - that Hanekom was a "known enemy agent" - was defamatory. 

Zuma's bid for leave to appeal the court judgment was dismissed on Thursday.

Pillay said appeal of judgment would have no reasonable prospects of success before another court.

The application was dismissed with costs.
