Magashule serves papers on ANC on step-aside rule

Suspended African National Congress secretary-general Ace Magashule has served papers on the ANC, arguing the rule forcing him to step aside from his position is unconstitutional.

News reports reveal that papers were served on Thursday and are set to be lodged in court today on a semi-urgent basis, and that advocate Dali Mpofu is acting on Magashule’s behalf.

In the papers, Magashule argued the party's Rule 25.70 in its constitution, that those who have been charged with serious crimes in a court of law should step aside, undermined the constitutional principle of innocent until proven guilty.

No pupil will be forced to take the vaccine

The Department of Basic Education has assured lobby group AfriForum that no learner will be forced to take the Covid-19 vaccine.

AfriForum wrote to the department to seek clarity on a media statement, which said that parents and guardians of learners must register as part of the Department of Health's planned vaccination programme.

The department said vaccination would be made available to all learners as part of their right to healthcare and that health education will be undertaken ahead of the vaccination rollout to support learners and their families in making informed choices.

The US is lifting Ebola travel restrictions on Guinea

The Biden administration is lifting Ebola-related travel restrictions for US visitors who have recently been in Guinea, effective from today.

In March, the Department of Homeland Security ordered that travellers who had been in Guinea and the Democratic Republic of the Congo within the past 21 days had to fly into one of six US airports.

Homeland Security said there had been no new Ebola cases reported in Guinea since early April.
