President Cyril Ramaphosa said the second phase of Covid-19 vaccinations will begin in mid-May, with registration starting next month.

He said although there were delays in securing vaccine supplies for the country, government was still confident it would achieve its inoculation targets.

To date, Ramaphosa said more than 250 000 healthcare workers had received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine as part of the Sisonke trial, which started in February.

Police ministry admits delay in releasing Marikana-inspired report

The police ministry has said that although a report on necessary police reforms was not made public for almost three years, work was done behind the scenes to implement the recommendations in it.

On Monday, Police Minister Bheki Cele finally released the report, which was completed in May 2018 after a panel of experts was established in April 2016.

Cabinet appointed the panel on the recommendation of the Marikana commission of inquiry.

Cele's spokesperson, Lirandzu Themba, said the ministry acknowledged the delays in releasing the report to the public but said it did not mean that the ministry and the South African Police Service had not taken any action.

756 new Covid-19 cases reported with 78 deaths

South Africa recorded 756 new Covid-19 infections by Tuesday, and 78 new Covid-19-related deaths, taking the confirmed death toll to 52 788.

As of Tuesday, the country recorded a total of 1 546 735 confirmed Covid-19 cases.

The total number of healthcare workers vaccinated under the Sisonke protocol is 251 707.

KwaZulu-Natal recorded the most active cases with 5 470, followed by the Western Cape's 5 046 and the Northern Cape with 2 547.
