Making headlines: Ramaphosa warns against land invasions, Maimane to state the DA’s position on land And, IEC says voter registration weekend 'went well' despite some disruptions

Ramaphosa warns against land invasions

President Cyril Ramaphosa has warned that land grabs would not be tolerated as the ruling ANC moves to change the Constitution to expropriate property without compensation.

Land remains an emotive issue in South Africa and most of it remains in white hands over two decades after apartheid's demise, despite government programmes aimed at redistribution to narrow glaring racial disparities in ownership.

Earlier this week, takeovers of vacant land in a suburb between Johannesburg and Pretoria provoked clashes with police.

Maimane to state the DA’s position on land

The DA leader Mmusi Maimane and the party’s shadow minister on rural development and land reform Thandeka Mbabama will set out the DA’s position on land reform today.

Maimane is expected to speak about the party’s land reform policy at the Old Fort at Constitution Hill following the party’s criticism yesterday for an SMS it had been sending out to the public to encourage people to register to vote this past weekend.

The SMS reads: "ANC and EFF are working together to take all private land and homes. You can only stop this if you're registered correctly to vote! Check now."

EC says voter registration weekend 'went well' despite some disruptions

The Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa said despite "isolated disruptions in a handful of areas" the voter registration process went well this weekend.

IEC spokesperson Kate Bopela said there were no major disruptions to report, but minor disruptions were reported at seven voting stations in Katlehong in Gauteng, interruptions at a voting station in Nthabankulu in the Eastern Cape, in QwaQwa and Harrismith in the Free State where residents demolished tents erected as temporary voting stations, and another tent being stolen in the Free State.

Other incidents included community members threatening landlords of venues used for voter registration in Tongaat in KwaZulu-Natal, and in Denoon in the Western Cape where protesting residents forced the evacuation of election staff.
