SA now has 13 confirmed coronavirus cases

Six more cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in South Africa, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize announced on Wednesday bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 13.  

Mkhize said all the patients who are symptomatic have started receiving treatment.

He said some of the patients are already in hospital while some, specifically those who are asymptomatic, are in self quarantine.

By Wednesday, at least 645 tests had been done in South Africa. 

Mangaung mayor survives second motion of no confidence

Mangaung Mayor Olly Mlamleli has survived another motion of no confidence which was tabled by the DA on Tuesday. 

The DA tabled the motion, claiming Mlamleli was responsible for the financial crisis in the City. 

Fifty-four ANC councillors voted against the motion and the DA's 34 councillors were in the minority with two DA councillors abstained from voting.

According to National Treasury, the Mangaung municipality's finances had deteriorated substantially since 2018/19, leading to the adoption of a financial recovery plan, which the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs and National Treasury agreed to. 

Pupil death toll for the year in Gauteng rises to 24, MEC 'lost for words'

The number of pupils in Gauteng that have died since the beginning of 2020 has increased yet again after the Gauteng education department announced that two more pupils had died.

Department spokesperson Steve Mabona said the department was saddened about the deaths.  

Mabona said Siyanda Ntshangase, a Grade 8 learner from Protea Glen Secondary School, passed away on March 4 after he allegedly suffered from an extreme migraine.

Sinesipho Mangaliso, a Grade 5 le a arner from Zenzeleni Primary School in Alexandra, passed away on March 6 when a stray bullet hit her while she was home.

This brings the number of pupils who have died in the province since the beginning of the school year to 24.
