Making headlines: South Africa to host Brics summit despite Putin arrest warrant, Outa says failure to implement State capture recommendations undermines democracy and, DA to march against race quotas
South Africa to host Brics summit despite Putin arrest warrant
South Africa says it will host the Brics bloc summit in August as planned, amid speculation that it may move to China so Russia's President Vladimir Putin can attend in a nation not obliged to arrest him on war crimes accusations.
South Africa has a duty as a signatory to the International Criminal Court to arrest Putin if he attends the talks.
Putin denies the charges.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa met with him on June 17 in Russia, historically a strong ally of the governing ANC since it was a liberation movement fighting white minority rule decades ago.
On Tuesday, South Africa's Minister of International Relations Naledi Pandor said Putin had not yet replied to an invitation, sent before the ICC charged him on March 18.
Outa says failure to implement State capture recommendations undermines democracy
The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse has accused Parliament of undermining democracy owing to its failure to implement the recommendations of the State Capture Commission, ahead of the International Day of Parliamentarism on Friday.
Last year, Chief Justice Raymond Zondo handed the commission’s last of six reports over to the Presidency.
Recently, he slammed Parliament for dragging its feet in holding those responsible for State capture accountable despite damning allegations from his reports.
Outa points out that the International Day of Parliamentarism should be a celebration of accountability and transparency in governance but instead it reminds South Africans of Parliament’s failures.
DA to march against race quotas
Democratic Alliance leader John Steenhuisen announced today that his party will be undertaking mass protest action in Cape Town, on July 26.
The march is against employment race quotas, and the party is demanding that the Employment Equity Amendment Act, implemented by Employment and Labour Minister Thulas Nxesi, be scrapped.
The DA estimated that 600 000 people will lose their jobs because they have the “wrong” skin colour or live and work in the “wrong” areas.
The DA will continue with its High Court Application to declare the Act unconstitutional.
