Eastern Cape ANC dismisses latest legal attempt to throw out provincial conference results
The ANC in the Eastern Cape has dismissed the latest legal attempt to overhaul the results of the provincial conference held in May.
An ANC member, Ondela Sokomani, who had previously attempted to halt the conference as it was in session, has again threatened to take the party to court.
A legal letter addressed to ANC treasurer-general Paul Mashatile has given the party 10 days to nullify the Eastern Cape provincial conference results.
The conference in question saw Oscar Mabuyane, the premier of the province, re-elected for a second term as chairperson, along with his entire slate.
Ramaphosa says Mkhwebane’s absence from office won’t impede investigations
President Cyril Ramaphosa has suspended Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane with immediate effect, assuring that her absence will not hinder the progress of any investigations that are pending or underway.
The Presidency said Mkhwebane would remain suspended until the Section 194 process in the National Assembly had been completed.
Last month Ramaphosa received Mkhwebane’s representations after he had asked her, in March, to provide him with reasons why he should not suspend her.
The Parliamentary committee can now proceed with investigations into her fitness to hold office.
Senegal's Sall says compromise still possible with Mali on election dates
Senegal President Macky Sall said he is still hopeful that a compromise can be reached with Mali's ruling military junta on the timeline for restoring democratic rule.
Mali's military leaders, who overthrew the government in 2020, have been negotiating with West Africa's regional bloc on how long they can hold power.
They announced this week they had decided on 24 months starting from March 2022.
The Economic Community of West African States said it regretted Mali's decision to publish a timeline during negotiations.
