Maimane says Zambian Hichilema's treason trial 'a political witch hunt'
Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane has described Zambian opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema's treason trial as "a political witch hunt by an increasingly threatened Zambian President Edgar Lungu".
A magistrate ruled yesterday that Hichilema was to go on trial for treason charges at the High court.
Hichilema was arrested in April for allegedly failing to give way to President Lungu's motorcade and has so far been held in detention for nearly two months.
MKMVA says MK council 'immature'
The Umkhonto we Sizwe council is “immature” for deciding to boycott the ANC's policy conference, the MK Military Veterans Association said yesterday.
The council, which consists of former MK generals and commissars, announced this week that it would not take part in the ruling party's policy conference later in June. Nor would it take part in the MKMVA’s own conference, which would start in Boksburg today.
And, Zuma says SA at its best in a crisis
President Jacob Zuma yesterday vowed to make use of all the country’s resources to pull it out of its technical recession.
South Africa functioned best during such a crisis, he said while receiving letters of credence from ambassadors and high commissioners at the Presidential Guest House in Pretoria.
Government and the private sector would discuss ways of recovering and reigniting confidence in the economy.
On Tuesday, Statistics SA said the country had slipped into a recession after its gross domestic product declined 0.7% during the first quarter of 2017, after contracting by 0.3% in the fourth quarter of 2016.
