Making headlines: DA files complaint with Parliament’s ethics committee against Malema, no televised recordings allowed in Gumede trial and, hikes ahead for all fuel grades in August
DA files complaint with Parliament’s ethics committee against Malema
DA leader John Steenhuisen in his capacity as a Member of Parliament, announced that his party will be filing a complaint with Parliament’s ethics committee against his fellow MP, EFF leader Julius Malema.
Over the weekend, during the EFF’s 10th birthday celebrations at the FNB Stadium in Soweto, Malema was heard chanting “Kill the Boer, kill the Farmer”.
Steenhuisen said a political leader who incites mass murder and a MP who calls for the killing of an entire section of society, is not normal.
The DA will further obtain legal advice on approaching the Public Protector and the courts.
Steenhuisen also announced that the DA was filing charges against Malema and the African National Congress government at the United Nations Human Rights Council.
No televised recordings allowed in Gumede trial
No televised recordings will be allowed of the upcoming chain of evidence in the corruption trial of former eThekwini mayor Zandile Gumede and her co-accused because the witnesses are afraid.
This after the home of an eThekwini Metro official, who is a witness in the trial, was shot at on July 22, mere days before the official was meant to testify.
During court proceedings last Wednesday, Judge Sharmaine Balton said the Hawks and police would conduct risk assessments on witnesses after the incident.
Witnesses would be provided with protection if required.
Balton outlined that witnesses in the upcoming thread of evidence had agreed to testify only if there were no televised recordings, if the media refrained from naming them, and if cellphones were not allowed in court.
Hikes ahead for all fuel grades in August
Fuel price hikes are expected for all fuel grades in August, unaudited data from the Central Energy Fund has shown.
The data suggests petrol unleaded 95 will climb by around 35 cents a litre, and petrol unleaded 93 by around 30c/l.
Diesel and illuminating paraffin will also jump by around 72 cents a litre.
The Automobile Association expressed concern at the impact of rising diesel prices.
