Inflation hits new 13-year high
Annual consumer inflation reached its highest level in 13 years, increasing to 7.8% in July from 7.4% in June. The increase was in line with economists' forecasts.
The consumer price index rose by 1.5% between June and July this year. According to Statistics SA, this was only the fourth time since 2008 that the monthly increase was 1.5% or higher.
Oils and fats saw the biggest price hikes - up 36% in July from a year ago.
In July, fuel prices were hiked by more than 10%. This hit transport prices in particular, with taxi fares up 9% in a single month. Taxi fares were 16% higher than a year ago. Petrol is 56% more expensive than it was a year ago.
Another legal setback for Mkhwebane after ConCourt dismisses impeachment rescission bid
The Constitutional Court has ordered that suspended Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane personally pay the costs of her last-ditch attempt to seek the rescission of the ruling that the impeachment inquiry process against her was lawful.
The apex court unanimously ruled that Mkhwebane "ought to pay costs in per personal capacity, as this application constitutes an abuse of process of court".
The Office of the Public Protector has previously revealed that it would not fund Mkhwebane's attempt to seek a rescission of the Constitutional Court's dismissal of her earlier rescission application.
Defence issues stall start of highly anticipated Babita Deokaran trial
The case of the six men accused of killing Gauteng health department official and whistleblower Babita Deokaran has been postponed again – this time to give the defence an opportunity to take further instructions on funding and certain documents.
The accused appeared briefly in the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg this morning, a day after the one-year anniversary of Deokaran's death.
Their lawyer, Shafique Sarlie, told the court that they had not been able to reach some agreement with family and friends, who are apparently raising money to fund the defence of the accused, and asked the court for more time.
Sarlie said the defence had been furnished with more evidence in the docket and that they expected to receive more documents from the State.
The court postponed the case to 6 October.
