DA caucus supports motion of no confidence in Patricia de Lille

An internal motion of no confidence against Cape Town Mayor Patricia De Lille was supported by the DA’s Cape Town caucus during a special meeting yesterday, paving the way for her to be recalled by her party.

Deputy caucus leader JP Smith told journalists after the vote that 138 councillors participated in the three-hour-long debate and voting process in the City of Cape Town council chamber.

Responding to the outcome of the caucus meeting De Lille she was not surprised by the result and added that she was preparing for another fight.

Mabuza dodges question on whether he met with the EFF

Deputy President David Mabuza dodged a question on whether he met with the EFF to discuss their proposed amendment to Parliament's rules, that would give the House fewer opportunities to question the deputy president.

In his follow-up question during yesterday's question session with Mabuza, DA chief whip John Steenhuisen asked him what he thought of the EFF's "rather bizarre request" to amend the rules that there be fewer of these sessions with the deputy president.

Currently, there is one every month while the House is in session and the EFF proposes that the number be reduced to one a term.

Fuel prices could hit record levels in May

There is a strong likelihood of a fuel price hike to record levels in May, the Automobile Association said yesterday.

The association said the rand was currently weakening against the dollar and international petroleum prices were also rising.

The AA also said the increase in toll fees across South Africa by between 6% and 7% signalled yet another financial blow to already cash-strapped South Africans.
