ANC Eastern Cape conference postponed over unresolved disputes
The Eastern Cape ANC's provincial congress, which was scheduled to take place this weekend, has been postponed because of pending political disputes.
The party was set to hold its conference from Friday to Sunday.
Complaints about procedures have dominated the province, and its leaders suspected the issues could impact the holding of the conference.
The conference is expected to see a fierce battle over political control of the province between former provincial chairperson Oscar Mabuyane and Babalo Madikizela, the former treasurer of the province.
Solidarity Fund vows to protect flood relief with 'same transparency' as Covid-19 funds
As government roped in the Solidarity Fund to facilitate the distribution of aid to victims of the deadly KwaZulu-Natal floods, questions are being raised about the level of trust in government entities to handle monies meant for social relief initiatives.
Chairperson of the Solidarity Fund Gloria Serobe said responding to the disaster falls within its second phase of operation and gave assurances that the fund will account for its activities with the same transparency and corporate governance that applied to all its activities.
The Solidarity Fund is a public-benefit organisation set up in 2020 to manage the country's response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has instructed it to undertake the task of disbursing assistance to those affected by the floods as the country grapples with increasing claims of embezzlement of public finances meant to cushion the public against the economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, which is still raging.
China donates R1m towards humanitarian relief efforts
China will donate R1-million toward relief efforts following devastating floods in KwaZulu-Natal.
Social Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu said the donation will allow government to meet the immediate needs of hundreds of families affected by recent floods.
While the floods have claimed the lives of 488 people, over 60 people are still missing and many families have been left without shelter and forced to use local community halls and schools.
Over 100 schools are affected in KZN which has put a halt on learning.
The money will also be used to assist Eastern Cape areas that were ravaged by extreme weather conditions, and to assist with a fire disaster in Langa, in the Western Cape, that left scores of people displaced.
