South Africans aged 60 and older can now register for the Covid-19 vaccine

Registration for the Covid-19 vaccine is now open to South Africans aged 60 years and over.

Citizens can register online via the Electronic Vaccination Data System as the country prepares for the second phase of the vaccination programme.

The EVDS was previously limited to the registration of frontline healthcare workers only, as part of the country’s first phase of the vaccination rollout.

Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize said the launch of the EVDS marked a significant milestone, not only for the country’s vaccination campaign, but for South Africa’s advancement towards Universal Health Coverage.

Lucky Montana laments 'biased' Zondo Commission

Former Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa CEO Lucky Montana came out swinging at the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into State Capture, chaired by Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo.

He accused it of being biased and of using the notion of "state capture" to do harm to South Africa's social fabric.

Montana appeared before the commission on Friday morning to testify, and as the hearing kicked off, the former head of the rail agency stood up and flayed the commission in a strongly worded diatribe.

His tenure at the helm of Prasa ended under a cloud over the reported impropriety of a contract for the procurement of locomotives.

Professor Abdool Karim says the AU did well in responding to Covid-19 pandemic

Infectious diseases epidemiologist Professor Quarraisha Abdool Karim has commended the African Union’s response to the coronavirus pandemic on the continent.

Addressing a virtual webinar, she said the AU leadership played a key role in containing the virus.

Abdool Karim noted that an important investment made by the AU is the establishment of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, led by John Nkengasong.

By early April, Africa recorded 4.3-million accumulative Covid-19 cases and about 115 000 deaths. 

To date there are 134-million Covid-19 cases and 2.9-million deaths globally.
