Corruption Watch, Treatment Action Campaign, church organisations and trade unions will today map a way forward on plans to remove President Jacob Zuma from office after an impeachment motion by political parties failed in Parliament.

The organisations, which included the Anglican Church of South Africa, the Evangelical Alliance, the South African Christian Leadership Initiative, the United Front, trade unions and artists’ coalition held an urgent meeting on Tuesday night and discussed “the growing political and economic crisis that faced South Africa.”

Ratings agencies will take the political situation in South Africa into account when reviewing its credit rating, Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan said yesterday after parliament voted against impeaching President Jacob Zuma.

Politics, economics and the fiscal situation are all things ratings agencies watch out for and South Africans should be aware of that. he said

Public Protector Thuli Madonsela took to Twitter to defend herself after Deputy Justice Minister John Jeffrey said that even she had doubts regarding her powers.

Speaking on behalf of the ANC during the impeachment debate yesterday, Jeffrey, who is also an attorney, quoted previous judgments which he said showed that there was doubt that the public protector's powers were crystal clear.

He said government argued that the public protector’s decisions could not be legally binding or enforceable.
