Making headlines:

The disaster bill has been passed in Parliament
ANC’s KZN chair will take a seat in the provincial legislature
And, China pledges to work with Africa in fighting militancy

The disaster management amendment bill was passed in Parliament on Wednesday with the support of all parties, except the EFF.

The bill aims to streamline the country's approach to planning for and responding to disasters.

This includes the drought currently gripping many parts of the country.

The bill also transfers the function of disaster management from national government to municipalities.

Rejecting the bill, the EFF said it did not trust the ANC to properly administer funds.

The bill has now been sent to the president for approval.

The ANC's newly elected chairperson Sihle Zikalala is set to be sworn in as a member of the KwaZulu-Natal provincial legislature on Thursday.

Zikalala will take his seat in the legislature, replacing Super Zuma, who leaves the legislature to work fulltime as party secretary in the province.

Zikalala was previously the party secretary, but he defeated KwaZulu-Natal Premier Senzo Mchunu for the top post in a tightly fought election at the party’s elective conference earlier this year.

China will strengthen its cooperation with Africa in the fight against violent extremism.

This follows an attack last week by Islamist militants in Mali, which killed 19 people, including three Chinese citizens.

Chinese President Xi Jinping called for relevant departments to boost security work outside China's borders last week after the attack.

Foreign Minister Wang Yi said China's stance was that its assistance to Africa would be without political conditions.

Yi said cooperation between China and Africa would not "take the old road by traditional powers" nor sacrifice Africa's environment and long-term interests.
