The DA welcomes the decision of the Tshwane Council to write off historical debt on water bills of Hammanskraal residents who receive water from the city.
For years, these residents have depended on water from tankers due to the state of the Rooiwal waste-water treatment plant that has polluted the city’s water supply.
The debt write-off, initiated by the DA and our coalition partners when in government, is an essential part of the Hammanskraal clean water project.
It will give consumers a clean slate to pay for water beyond the basket of free basic services offered by the city.
This clean slate will, in turn, enable the city to pay Magalies Water for potable water received from the Klipdrift package plant.
This is the only way that the Hammanskraal clean water project can be sustained.
The DA reiterates our call for the City of Tshwane to deliver the first phase of the project before schools close on 11 December this year.
In light of what has already been achieved, and the plans that were in place when we left office, the DA believes that this is possible.
