The DA welcomes the recent raid conducted by the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) and South African Police Service (SAPS) at the "Sun City" correctional facility in Johannesburg.
This operation is a crucial step towards addressing the prevalent issue of contraband smuggling within our prison system. While it is acknowledged that visitors play a role in smuggling illicit items, it is apparent that a significant amount of contraband finds its way into prisons via corrupt officials.
Officials suspected of involvement in these activities will face internal disciplinary processes. The DA emphasises that those found guilty must not only be dismissed but also face criminal charges. This will not only serve as a deterrent but also restore and uphold the integrity of Correctional Services, and ultimately ensuring the safety of both inmates and officials.
Intensified efforts to conduct similar raids across all correctional facilities must be done. This is necessary to root out corruption within DCS and to restore public trust in the administration of justice. The presence of contraband undermines the rehabilitation efforts of inmates and compromises the security of our prisons.
We commend Correctional Services Commissioner Makgothi Thobakgale for taking proactive measures in combating corruption within DCS. However, more must be done to promote transparency and accountability at the Department.
The DA advises DCS to maintain its momentum to cleanse our correctional facilities of corruption. We are ready to collaborate with stakeholders and government bodies to ensure that our prisons operate with the highest standards of integrity and professionalism.
