The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Mangaung Metro Municipality (MMM) welcomes Zuziwe Lydia Thekiso's permanent appointment as CFO, anticipating that it will result in much-needed financial stability.

The financial affairs of MMM have remained in disarray, rated worst-run Metro in South Africa, earlier this year. Both Provincial and National Interventions have failed to address the situation effectively. MMM is still under National Intervention, and we hope to gain clarity on the standing of the municipality once the new Minister of CoGTA is appointed.

The newly appointed CFO should concentrate on the following aspects to turn the financial affairs of MMM around:

Manage overtime expenditure that is spiralling out of control.

Intensify debt collection measures.

Spend Capital Budget and Grants to its full capacity to deliver much-needed value for money maintenance and service delivery.

Provide evidence supporting quarterly reports to the Council and Treasury.

Curb wasteful and fruitless expenditure.

The DA will diligently continue its oversight of MMM's financial affairs. We are hopeful that Thekiso will consider the recommendations made by DA and that she will be placed in a position to fulfil her duties, without political interference.
