The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Western Cape welcomes the arrest of three suspects following the seizure of four rifles, a 9mm pistol, more than 350 rounds of ammunition, various vehicle registration plates and other suspicious electronic equipment by Law Enforcement Advancement Plan (LEAP) officers in Crossroads.

The seizure followed a tip-off from members of the public to LEAP officers who were conducting patrols in the area. Every anonymous tip-off has the potential to generate valuable intelligence that enables law enforcement agencies to act before crimes are committed. Intelligence-driven policing is one of the most effective tools in the fight against violent crime, and community cooperation is essential to its success.

This operation is yet another example of how effective crime fighting depends not only on proactive policing but also on strong partnerships between law enforcement and the communities they serve. The information provided by vigilant residents enabled an intelligence-led operation that has likely prevented further violent crime and saved lives.

By removing these weapons from our streets, law enforcement has dealt a significant blow to the criminal networks and gangsters who continue to terrorise communities across the Western Cape. These arrests must now be followed by thorough investigations, successful prosecutions and lengthy prison sentences to ensure that dangerous criminals are kept off our streets.

Illegal firearms remain one of the primary drivers of murder, gang violence and organised crime in the Western Cape. While removing these weapons from circulation is a significant victory, sustained efforts are needed to dismantle the criminal syndicates responsible for trafficking and distributing these firearms.”

The city also operates dedicated 24-hour anonymous tip-off channels, including 021 480 7700, where residents can report general crime, extortion and other illegal activities without fear of intimidation.
