Democratic Alliance (DA) leader in KwaZulu-Natal Francois Rodgers says one of his councillors, who is accused of murdering his own family, left him in shock and flew in the face of the evidence originally presented to him.
On Monday, News24 reported Michael Buthelezi was arrested for allegedly killing his wife and three children.
He faces four counts of murder.
This after a fire engulfed the family's home in October.
Speaking to News24, Rodgers expressed shock and called on police not to give any special treatment to Buthelezi.
"The law must take its course. When it happened, I called on the South African Police Service (SAPS) to speedily investigate the matter to bring whoever the perpetrator is to book.
"If it happens to be a member of the DA that is found guilty then there should be no special treatment.
"This type of behaviour is abnormal in our society, and it cannot be tolerated. No matter where it comes from," he said.
Rodgers added the DA would provide the police with all the information they needed to ensure there was justice for "this terrible deed".
Asked about the response upon hearing the new development, he said he was shocked.
"It certainly flew in the face of the evidence originally presented, including Buthelezi himself sustaining serious burn wounds and being hospitalised for some time."
Rogers added the fire at the family's house broke out in October.
He said:
I was on the scene the day after the fire, and it was alleged that somebody had thrown some sort of flammable substance in the house and there were gunmen outside so no one could get out of the house.
"The councillor's wife and children died. He was also badly burned and spent a few days in hospital."
Rodgers said provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi informed him Buthelezi was arrested and was a suspect in this case.
He added the DA's federal legal commission was also investigating the incident.
"We are not going to investigate the criminal matter. We are going to look at the severity of the case.
"They will also look at the charges against the individual and then make a determination on whether there is enough evidence to suspend or terminate the individual's membership.
"This is an isolated incident. We must remember that at this stage it is all allegations.
"There appears to be no political motive or connection behind this. Justice must be served as the DA believes in law and order," he said.
The case has been postponed to Thursday.
