Following the resignation of Bonginkosi Madikizela, the DA's Western Cape Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) started the process to elect an interim leader.
A call for nominations will go out later today for the election which will take place on 29 May 2021 at the DA Western Cape's Provincial Council meeting.
We referred the matter to the party’s Federal Legal Commission (FLC) who, after studying both the Federal and Provincial Constitutions, confirmed that our original understanding to proceed with the election of the Western Cape Interim Leader was correct.
According to the Federal and Provincial Constitutions, a provincial leader can only be elected at a Provincial Congress. Therefore, the leader elected on 29 May 2021 at the Provincial Council meeting, will act as interim leader until the next Provincial Congress.
