The Democratic Alliance (DA) has submitted the first batch of over 200,000 signatures, on our petition against Eskom's proposed 40% price hike, to the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) today.

The DA protested outside NERSA's offices in Pretoria, as hundreds joined us to show their opposition to Eskom's tariff increase application.

The DA has been inundated with residents opposing this ridiculous tariff hike, signing our petition to force NERSA to reject Eskom's application. We see this as a powerful call from South Africans across the country for urgent action on the ongoing energy crisis.

This petition signals the frustration and fatigue of millions who are grappling daily with the economic and social impacts of sky-high electricity prices, a cost of living crisis, a recent history of devastating load-shedding and unreliable power supply in hundreds of municipalities.

The DA’s petition amplifies the voices of citizens who are demanding accountability, and transparency, from NERSA to reject Eskom's application for an effective 40% price hike next year. It is now up to NERSA to heed this call and take decisive action to prioritise the needs of the people over continued failures.

As NERSA commences public hearings on this electricity tariff hike application from Eskom, the DA urges South Africans to participate - Do not let the opportunity to come out and voice your opposition go to waste.

South Africa is watching NERSA closely. The DA remains committed to fighting for sustainable, reliable, and affordable energy solutions that will support our economy and society.

The DA will not rest until every citizen can access the reliable, affordable energy they deserve.
