The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Moqhaka Local Municipality vehemently condemns the use of derogatory language by the Executive Mayor, Motloheloa Mokatsane. A petition, endorsed by approximately 1500 concerned residents, has been formally submitted to address this grave issue.

In a widely circulated social media recording, Mayor Mokatsane referred to community members using a deeply offensive term and labelled residents as violent individuals. Shockingly, these deplorable remarks were met with insufficient response from the ANC, lacking the real consequences such behaviour demands.

Additionally, the Mayor has consistently flouted regulations and commitments within the council. Promised Eskom payment plans, crucial for the community's stability, were never submitted, leading to the municipality’s Eskom debt skyrocketing above R 1 billion. Moreover, the mayor failed to deliver the mandated unfunded budget, neglecting responsibilities that have significantly impacted the quality of life in our towns: Kroonstad, Steynsrus, and Viljoenskroon.

The evident decline in service delivery and infrastructure maintenance, especially in these main towns, highlights the gravity of the situation. The allocated budget for maintenance falls well below the recommended percentages, dissuading potential investors seeking stable environments for growth.

Moqhaka, with its strategic geographical location, has immense potential. However, under Mayor Mokatsane's lacklustre leadership, the municipality has not been able to progress. There has been a shortage of essential investments and growth necessary for job creation and community upliftment.

Moqhaka deserves leadership that nurtures progress and fosters investment. Clean water, functional roads, and pristine environments are fundamental rights of our residents. Unfortunately, the reality is a polluted river, crumbling roads, and undrinkable water at times. The DA firmly believes that a better future is within reach, provided we have dedicated, visionary leadership.

We call on Mokatsane to step down immediately or urge the ANC to take decisive action against his unacceptable conduct. A mere slap on the wrist will not suffice. Moqhaka's residents deserve better, especially our children, who deserve a future filled with hope and the opportunity to chase their dreams.

Addressing this issue is not just about holding one individual accountable; it is about safeguarding the dignity and future of our community. By taking a stand against hate speech and incompetence, we pave the way for a Moqhaka where everyone thrives, businesses flourish, and residents can proudly call it home.

Issued by Chris Dalton - DA Councillor Moqhaka Local Municipality
