The DA can reveal that Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department officers face 88 cases of corruption and bribery, in just the last five years, but only 8 have been dismissed.
Today I am outside the court in Brakpan where suspended EMPD Chief Julius Mkhwanazi is appearing on his fourth arrest in recent months.
The rot in the Ekurhuleni Metro Police starts right at the top. This is why a complete change in government is needed in the Metro, in the upcoming election.
Ekurhuleni residents are living in fear, while corrupt EMPD officers solicit bribes instead of enforcing the law.
Written replies to DA questions in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL) have revealed these shocking statistics about the criminality of EMPD officers.
Evidence at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry continues to point out that EMPD officers have been allowed to do as they please, neglecting their core mandate of enforcing by-laws and protecting residents.
Out of 88 cases of bribery, just 16 officials have been placed on suspension, and just eight cases have resulted in dismissals - which shows that Ekurhuleni does not take the scourge of its criminal officers seriously.
I will now put in further questions to MEC Mamabolo to determine the amount spent on salaries for the suspended officials.
The DA continues to fight corruption and criminality in Ekurhuleni with all of our might. We are tough on corruption and crime, and we will rid the Metro of corruption if we are elected into government.
The DA has a plan to ensure continuous vetting of EMPD officers to ensure that residents are served by honest and dedicated officers. A DA government will clean up Ekurhuleni.
