The Democratic Alliance (DA) has written to the Office of the Public Protector to request an investigation into the controversial Moretele RDP housing project.

Community members allege that the allocation of housing beneficiaries is irregular.

Yesterday, a DA delegation paid a visit to Cyferskuil to engage community members about this RDP project. We were informed that they will continue to protest against the construction of these houses until their concerns with the housing list is resolved..

Residents further alleged that Moretele Mayor, Andries Monageng, allocated houses to his supporters rather than the poor who are in need of decent housing. They also claim that those who will benefit irregularly are politically aligned to the Mayor and are beneficiaries of the Community Workers Programme (CWP).

Community members complain that there is never any consultation from the municipality on issues of service delivery, communication is sent out through SMS and it only goes out to a few people.

Residents also expressed frustration with other projects that were never completed. The municipality previously launched a project to connect taps to every home, which were installed, but never connected to a water source.

A paving project was announced which was said to be in phase 1, but nothing has happened since the announcement.

Community members claim that they live in fear of the Mayor because he threatens anyone who opposes or questions him.

It is clear that there is no accountability from the municipality in terms of fulfilling and delivering on projects to uplift the community.

The DA has also requested the Public Protector to investigate the other incomplete projects to ensure that there was no mismanagement or corruption.

The DA is the only party that is committed to speeding up the delivery of housing. Under a DA-led government, we will make one fair and public housing list and speed up the building of homes.
