The Democratic Alliance is reporting the Enoch Mgijima municipality to the Human Rights Commission for failing the residents of Twinsville and parts of Eluxolweni in Hofmeyr, by depriving them of a reliable supply of water since 2018.

Until recent months, the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality carted water to these communities in trucks, but they cannot even be bothered to do that any longer.

This is a disgrace!

Most taps in these communities are dry, and residents must walk for kilometres to find water. This is despite recent heavy rains that have resulted in full dams and excellent groundwater levels.

On conducting oversight in the village yesterday, I was reliably informed that a qualified electrician who understands water pumps and the timers that control water flow could easily effect repairs to the malfunctioning pump stations in a couple of days.

Municipal officials, who do not have the capacity to do this, have opted to drive to and from a borehole 30km outside of the town twice a day. From there, they pump a small percentage of the required water volume to the village. This does not even cover a fraction of the houses in the community.

This is tantamount to fruitless and wasteful expenditure, but it is to be expected from a municipality so riddled with incapacity and clueless, corrupt cadres that they cannot even clean up their act under national administration.

The ANC must remember that every time they fail their residents, they take one step closer to losing their grip on this province in 2024.

The DA will continue to fight for the constitutional rights of all residents in our province.
