The DA in Theewaterskloof opposes the municipality's attempts to introduce an additional capital levy increase of R5 per service for municipal services. Furthermore, the proposed increase is unlawful since it was never authorized by council.

The increase means that households using water, power, sewerage and solid waste services, will pay an additional R20 per month on their account. We believe that the PA/ANC municipal government has, just like their national counterparts, lost touch with reality, and is denying that most South Africans are struggling.

We have written to Executive Mayor Kallie Papier, expressing our opposition to the tariff increases and emphasizing that it is improper and unlawful for the mayor to summarily interject new variations to the IDP that have not been presented to, assessed by, or approved by Council halfway through a prescribed process. Offering the public only seven days to evaluate it, without any support documentation whatsoever, adds insult to injury.

This is an unreasonable and unlawful interjection and we call on the mayor to terminate it immediately.
