The Democratic Alliance Students’ Organisation (DASO) held its 1st Special Branch General Meeting at the new Sol Plaatje University (SPU) yesterday. The purpose of this meeting was to elect a leadership structure that will lead and constitute the new DASO-SPU branch.
This is a significant milestone in student politics in the Northern Cape.
At a time when higher education in the country is facing massive challenges, such as funding issues and campuses are marred with violence, decisive leadership is needed.
DASO is a force to be reckoned with.
We are mindful that incidents of violence threaten the credibility of the legitimate plight of students who have real concerns about higher education.
We also believe that our campuses do not benefit from divisive groups who polarise the discussions around issues of inclusivity and accessibility.
DASO further advocates that student organisations should engage in peaceful and legitimate processes to ensure that the interests of ALL on campus have been heard.
During the past few weeks, DASO held massive student recruitment drives at SPU and has successfully signed-up more than enough students to form a branch.
DASO is a student organisation aligned to the Democratic Alliance. A DASO branch is based on a tertiary campus, and therefore in itself subscribes to the vision, mission, and strategies of the DA, with its own student oriented focus.
The meeting was presided over by the Provincial Chairperson of the DA Harold McGluwa (MPL), as well as Dr. Isak Fritz (MPL).
