The DA in Matjhabeng will lodge a formal complaint following disturbing footage that came to light where a municipal employee appears to damage a refuse removal truck in what can be described as an act of sabotage.

In the footage an employee of this municipality is seen stopping the truck after which he forcefully uses a tool or rock to drive a sharp object into the tyre. The incident happened approximately 150 meters away from the municipality’s workshop where the trucks are parked.

For far too long, residents in Matjhabeng have been struggling with proper refuse removal services. After the great unveiling in 2021 of new refuse fleet, it was touted that that Matjhabeng’s refuse woes were a thing of the past. But week in and week out, ward councillors have had to relay the news that Matjhabeng’s refuse trucks have been struck by flat tyres or other mechanical issues.

Schedules for removal are sent out but often not adhered to, leaving residents infuriated with torn bags when the department does not fulfil its commitment to follow their schedule. Many neighbourhoods in Matjhabeng have weeks’ worth of refuse piling up on their properties and many pay out of their own pocket to remove the refuse bags to avoid the stench.

I have brought the matter under the attention of the Director of Community Services, Lauretta van Wyk, as well as Bokvel Pietersen who leads the department enforcing bylaws. I have suggested that the employee be suspended immediately until the investigation is completed.

The DA Matjhabeng would like to make a plea to the community that if they witness any acts of this nature, that they make contact with their ward councillor.
