The Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal will nominate Janis Holmes for the position of Speaker of the uMngeni Municipality.
This follows the historic victory where the DA secured an outright majority in the municipality to give the party its first government in KZN.
The Speaker-elect has been a councillor in the uMngeni Municipality since 2011. Janis is a born and bred resident of Howick and has a Bachelor of Social Science degree, majoring in Political Science and Legal Studies from the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
The position of Speaker in the municipality will be of critical importance for the DA to ensure that the legislative arm of the municipality focuses on delivering services and cutting out corruption.
There are a number of important forensic reports that will be on top of the agenda for Speaker-elect Holmes to deal with and process, as well as prioritising councillor oversight.
The Speaker-elect will also seek to improve public participation in the municipality to ensure it is more meaningful and not treated as a last minute tick box exercise. This will allow a more inclusive DA-led council to hear directly from residents about the issues that matter to them.
