The Democratic Alliance in the Western Cape urges all residents of the Western Cape to prioritise road safety. With the increased traffic volumes during this festive season, we all must remain vigilant and take all necessary precautions to avoid accidents and ensure the safety of all road users.
To ensure road safety, The Western Cape Government has since launched its Festive Season Road Safety plan. Traffic Management teams are prepared and ready, with almost 600 Provincial Traffic Officers working tirelessly to ensure that everyone on our roads are safe.
Daily operations across all districts in the province include:
• High visibility patrols monitoring moving violation offences;
• Speed enforcement, including Average Speed Over Distance monitoring; and
• Roadblocks to detect drunk driving, driver fatigue, and passenger overloading; as well as enforcing seat belt usage; and checking documentation, driver fitness, and vehicle fitness.
Several comprehensive programmes are also in place, such as:
• Inter-provincial corridor operations in collaboration with our neighbouring provinces;
• Pedestrian awareness interventions;
• Driver awareness interventions focusing on alcohol for public transport operators; and
• Integrated fatigue operations on key routes
Our sincerest wish is for all families to arrive at their destination, alive and well.
MPP Derrick America said: “Driving recklessly, disobeying road rules, speeding, and driving under the influence are among the many irresponsible behaviours that put the lives and safety of all road users at risk. There is no excuse for such behaviour, and we urge law enforcement across the Western Cape to take appropriate steps against drivers who break the rules.
The Western Cape will send a clear message that dangerous driving behaviour will not be tolerated in the province.”
