The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Molemole Local Municipality submitted a motion to the Speaker, Dikeledi Phakgadi, to call for lasting solutions around the irregular water billing system.
This followed after overwhelming complaints by the residents of Mogwadi who were paying for water they are not receiving for over a year.
According to the residents, they have been without water for up to 2 months at a time.
The DA conducted an oversight, only to confirm that the taps in Mogwadi were bone dry.
The growing discontent of the residents of Mogwadi spilled over into the streets this week.
Desperate and frustrated residents blocked roads with burning tyres and rocks.
Although the situation remains tense, the roads are open, but the municipal offices remain closed, in fear for officials’ safety due to their own inability to deliver basic services to the residents.
Provincially 73.3% of households receive water from a service provider, whereas in Molemole municipality, only 54% of households have this service.
Residents of Mogwadi are suffering without the access of water that they have paid for and there are growing concerns around hygiene and health concerns.
The DA demands answers on the irregular billing system and how the challenges will be solved.
The Molemole municipality has a constitutional mandate to ensure that all residents have access to water and we will hold them to their mandate.
Issued by Calvin Matjee - DA Councillor for Molemole Local Municipality
