The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Limpopo strongly condemns the latest incident of mob violence near Salema Village where 37-year-old woman, Basani Portia Shuma, died after she was tied to a vehicle and dragged through the bushes for several kilometers.

The victim was then pelted with stones and her house was set on fire.

The police dispersed the crowd with rubber bullets and took the victim to the Malamulele hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries.

The mob apparently acted as they believed the victim was responsible for the disappearance of a local man who went missing 2 weeks ago.

Mob justice is on the increase in Limpopo.

In January 2022, there were 2 incidents, one in which 3 men were murdered for the alleged theft of livestock at Ga-Maila a Mapitsana in Sekhukhune and in Gilead, close to Mokopane, and a woman was murdered by a mob following a fatal domestic incident.

The DA believes that investigations by SAPS must be concluded expeditiously to avoid frustrated communities from taking the law into their own hands.

SAPS in Limpopo must also implement anti-mob campaigns in communities, to educate communities on the dangers of mob justice, to encourage them to work hand in hand with law enforcement.

We trust that the investigation into Ms Shuma’s death is finalised swiftly and that the perpetrators will be brought to justice.

Issued by DA Provincial Spokesperson on Transport and Community Safety, Katlego Suzan Phala MPL
