The Democratic Alliance (DA) will visit officials and drive an urgent investigation into broken water infrastructure in Kestell.

After a year of pleading with the Maluti-a-Phofung Municipality to repair water infrastructure in Kestell, it has become clear that the need to provide water to the entire community is not important to them.

The inefficiency of the pump station has been blamed on loadshedding. However, the DA detected that all these demises are caused by lack of appropriate maintenance and skills by those responsible. Their indolent attitude and lack of response to the problem is creating chaos for people of Kestell.

Just this year, some parts of Kestell have been without water for more than 2 weeks. This is an infringement of their basic human right. The Sterkfontein dam, Fika Patso and other dams in the Maluti-a-Phofung are full, despite this abundance of water, both Kestell and Thlolong are mostly without water.

Maluti-a-Phofung pumps water from Sterkfontein dam to the Escol reservoir from a hill, halfway to QwaQwa and from there it flows by gravity to Bluegumbush. The water flow is supposed to be divided and structured evenly to Kestell and other nearby areas. Sadly this is not happening.

The greatest problem lies with the officials of Maluti-a-Phofung Water (SOC) LTD, who always have an excuse by blaming power failures as the disruption of the supply. Cadre deployment has failed the delivery of this basic service as those in charge, hold no expertise and skills to handle the job at hand.

The MMC of Infrastructure and several officials of Maluti-a-Phofung were recently invited by the DA to visit the Kestell Pump station as it is the area of importance. Instead of taking recommendations from the DA, they choose to play the guessing game on how the crisis should be dealt.

On Wednesday, the DA will meet with the officials where we will demand immediate action on this crisis. We will continue to fight for water distribution by the Municipality.
