The Democratic Alliance (DA) has raised serious concerns following yesterday's meeting between Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero, and Eskom regarding the City’s escalating electricity debt crisis.

While efforts to avoid power cut-offs are necessary, the DA is deeply concerned by the lack of transparency and detail provided to residents following the briefing.

The City has now admitted that it failed to collect enough electricity revenue to pay Eskom, resulting in the collapse of the previous payment agreement. This confirms the DA’s long-standing warnings that Johannesburg is facing a severe financial and governance crisis under the ANC/EFF/PA coalition.

Residents and businesses should not be left in the dark while vague agreements are negotiated behind closed doors.

The DA calls on the City to immediately make public:

• The total debt owed to Eskom,
• The full repayment proposal,
• The details of the planned ring-fencing arrangement between Eskom and City Power.

Johannesburg residents deserve transparency, accountability, and a stable electricity supply.
