The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Mantsopa Local Municipality has conducted an in-depth oversight of the ongoing water supply crisis affecting Extensions 9 and 10. This crisis has left over 700 to 1,000 residents without a reliable water supply in their homes for more than ten years. Please see the pictures here, here, here and here.

During our engagement with the residents, they expressed frustration over the lack of progress and the absence of any concrete plans for a water project to address their needs. Currently, these residents are forced to wait between 4 to 12 days for water deliveries via JoJo tanks—a temporary solution that fails to meet the basic human right to water.

In addition to the water shortages, residents are grappling with unfinished sanitation facilities, particularly toilets that lack a water supply, further deteriorating their quality of life. The DA recognises the gravity of this situation and the prolonged neglect these communities have endured.

The DA will escalate this matter to the provincial legislature, demanding an immediate audit of the water infrastructure in Extensions 9 and 10. We will push for the urgent implementation of a sustainable water supply project, with clear timelines and accountability measures in place. Furthermore, we will work to ensure that the unfinished toilets are completed and fully functional within the shortest possible timeframe.

We call on the municipality to prioritise this crisis and to provide the residents with a detailed plan of action. The DA will continue to engage with all relevant stakeholders and keep the community informed of all developments. Our commitment is to hold those responsible to account and to secure a permanent and dignified solution for the residents of Extensions 9 and 10.
