Mangaung Metro's failure to address the looming Cholera epidemic is symptomatic of the national water crisis we have on our hands. Currently, 8 out of 9 Wastewater Treatment Works (WWTW) are operating well below capacity, with 6 of them completely non-functional.
This dire situation allows untreated sewage to flow directly into streams and storm-water drains, causing sewage mainlines to collapse and turning roads into rivers of filth. Consequently, our river catchment areas are contaminated, posing a severe threat to the well-being of Mangaung residents.
The DA has urgently requested an explanation from the acting Executive Mayor and relevant officials as to why the maintenance and refurbishment of the WWTW have not yet commenced, and when they are expected to be completed. We have further demanded, in accordance with Rule 38 of the Metro's Standing Rules and Orders, an increase in regular testing at the Maselspoort and Brandkop distribution points, alongside the identification of additional testing locations throughout the network, to ensure the absence of water contamination.
To keep residents informed and safeguard public health, we insist on the regular publication of water contamination test results, patient statistics, and hotspot areas in the media. Furthermore, the immediate distribution of information leaflets and social media posts regarding cholera diagnosis, prevention, and temporary treatment will prove invaluable to our community.
Our concern extends to the lack of a competent "Mangaung Disaster Plan," which fails to adequately address an outbreak of this nature. We demand urgent amendments to ensure preparedness for such emergencies.
This dire situation could have been prevented if the ANC had prioritised routine maintenance of the WWTW and the systematic replacement of aged infrastructure. Unfortunately, they chose to disregard our sustainable recommendations and allowed the looting and vandalism of resources within the WWTW and Fleet. Shockingly, there have been no convictions or internal investigations into the theft of the Welvaart WWTW fence, despite photographic evidence.
The absence or poor quality of waste collection services leads to numerous environmental and public health issues. Hardworking taxpayers have faithfully paid their dues, only to witness gross mismanagement. They receive no services in return for their taxes.
As we persist in fighting for the delivery of basic services, the upcoming national government elections in 2024 present the ideal opportunity for residents to shape our government's future and indirectly influence the fate of failing municipalities like Mangaung. By voting for the DA, a party committed to change and efficient service delivery, residents can pave the way for a better tomorrow.
