The Democratic Alliance in Msunduzi is appalled by the municipality’s attempts to unlawfully evict residents in the Manor Garden flats.
Once again there is another community burning and in turmoil over a municipality that continues to fail its people.
For two days in a row, the small community of the Manor Garden flats have taken to the streets in protest against the municipality's inability to manage its mandate and execute its responsibilities.
While we strongly condemn the destruction of property and a halt to service delivery, the sub-par services rendered by Msunduzi have long haunted this community.
An eviction campaign has been instituted against the non-payment of rentals and services within these municipal owned rental properties. This comes after a historic battle between the tenants and the municipality with regards to the lack of effective and equitable management over these flats.
Had the municipality delivered on their mandate and made plans for the community to be able to pay for services, we would not be in the situation we find ourselves today.
The municipality needs to stop playing politics with this situation and outsource their rental stock to an organisation that can manage it efficiently and effectively without political interference.
In the 2021 Local Government Elections, the people of Msunduzi have an opportunity to send out a strong message to the ANC.
