The Democratic Alliance (DA) is concerned that Mantsopa Local Municipality is not acknowledging their hand in the rising crime rate. Over the past years, the DA has urged the Municipality to implement a policy which deals with abandoned properties and vandalised government buildings, harbouring criminal elements.
The most recent example is the illegal occupation of the ablution building situated next to the municipality in Ladybrand. The illegal occupants have on numerous occasions been arrested for various crimes, including theft of municipal electrical property, yet Mantsopa Municipal Manager, Matiro Mogopoli, has done nothing about the crisis.
As we enter the festive season wherein crime usually increases and many residents leave on holiday, Mantsopa must remove all illegal occupants from abandoned government buildings and ensure that abandoned private properties are cleared and secured.
In addition to addressing the issue of illegal occupants and abandoned properties, a DA government would also prioritize the establishment of effective crime prevention strategies. This would involve collaborating with law enforcement agencies and implementing community outreach programs to foster a sense of safety and security among residents. Furthermore, investing in infrastructure and public spaces would contribute to creating a well-maintained environment that deters criminal activity.
