Yesterday, residents of Boiketlong in Emfuleni took to the streets barricading the roads in an attempt to stop MMC Bheki Ntsele from announcing the housing allocation.

Residents claim that the housing list does not include people who have waited years to receive housing.

The Boiketlong area is overpopulated and the municipality could only implement other development projects by reallocating residents to different areas.

Residents who have been staying in Boiketlong for years were told that they would be moved to a new section to make way for the new project developments.

The ANC Ward Councillor Lawrence Selloane and MMC Ntsele allegedly promised to give preference to the Boitekong residents when the new housing project was completed.

The community of Lethabong who also reside within the ward were provided with fake eviction letters which led them to take the municipality to court to stop the fake eviction notices.

Residents have expressed their frustration towards the municipality and are now demanding that the housing allocation be stopped.

The DA will write to the Municipal Manager Acting Municipal Manager Refiloe Mokgosi, requesting the municipality to conduct an audit of the municipality’s housing list to ensure that housing projects are allocated fairly.

Further to this, the municipality must be transparent with housing lists so residents can track where they rank on the lists.

Issued by DA Chief Whip: Sedibeng District Municipality, Cllr Dady Mollo
